have websites, please visit our
Regional Jumping Clubs page.
Organizations & Sites - US & Canada
AmericanSkiJumping.com
This website is devoted to preserving the history of ski jumping in the United States.
It contains a virtual Hall of Fame. It grew out of an effort begun by a
handful of old midwestern jumpers to give formal recognition to Red Wing MN as the
"Birthplace of American Ski Jumping." The first officially recorded tournament was
held there in 1887, and a 37 foot flight by Mikkel Hemmestvedt has long been recognized
as the first North American distance record. Although there's a terrific display of
ski jumping memorabilia at the historic St James Hotel in Red Wing, the American Ski
Jumping website is intended to serve as a virtual museum. Please visit the website
and use the contact information provided there if you're interested in learning about
the history of our sport, or if you have something to contribute.
National Sports Foundation - Park City
The National Sports Foundation is based in Park City, and operates development and training
programs for ski jumper from beginners up to US Ski Team athletes. There is a junior jump
complex at Utah Olympic Park, as well as the 90 meter and 120 meter Olympic jumps. All are
equipped with inrun and landing surfaces that permit summer jumping.
SkiJumpEast.com
An excellent source for information related to ski jumping. It's maintained by Don West,
an active Masters IV jumper from Plattsburgh, New York (Masters IV is for jumpers from age
60 through 69). Lots of great links, this is a site to browse when you can take the time to
really explore. Although it's primarily aimed at the Eastern U.S., it presents a good look at
American ski jumping from old days to the present. Kudos to Don for a great site!
SkiJumpingCanada
Attractive and informative site based in Calgary, site of the 1988 Olympics. Lots of
information, lots of photos all identified by name, bios of athletes. Plan on spending
some time on this one!
Independent Websites
Ski Jumping Spectator
Great, informative blog by Landis Arnold, a former US Ski Team jumper. Very informative,
lots of links to various other ski jumping resources, articles, etc. Please let others
know about this outstanding new resource for ski jumping info on the web!
SkiLibrary.com
Developed by Ingrid Wicken, who has written several books about western skiing history,
especially in Southern California. Many people are surprised to learn that there were
some big jumps in that region. She also has a physical facility for her collections,
and it's open by appointment. We think you'll find this to be an interesting and
informative website.
National & International Organizations
United States Ski Association (USSA)
The governing body for all organized skiing in the United States. The clubs in the
midwestern USA are member clubs within the Central Division of the USSA.
International Ski Federation (FIS)
The governing body for all organized skiing in the world. The FIS is the ultimate
rule-making and sanctioning authority for all international ski federations and events.
This is an interesting site. Make a note to follow a tournament online next season
... the FIS does a fantastic job with real-time scoring. You can follow every ride
and immediate updating of the scoreboard.
FIS World Cup Ski Jumping website
Launched in December 2008, this is the official FIS site for the sport of ski
jumping. We encourage you to visit this site, and we'll keep referencing it in
our World Cup coverage.
Skiing Heritage Quarterly
and International Skiing History Association
This website is loaded with superb historical information on the sport of skiing.
Former SKI Magazine editors Morten Lund, Dick Needham, and Seth Masia are among
the contributors to this outstanding site. Primarily oriented toward Alpine, but
there are occasionally good jumping and NC articles, too. Attractive and informative.
Places of Interest - USA
National Ski Hall of Fame
The U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame is located in Ishpeming, Michigan.
If you're planning a trip to Upper Michigan or northern Wisconsin, you might consider
a visit to this interesting museum. Your webmaster graduated from Northern Michigan
University at Marquette back in 1965, and has visited the museum on various occasions.
It's something that you'll enjoy if you are interested in the history of the sport in
America. And don't forget to eat a pasty when you're among the "Yoopers."
Utah Olympic Park
The site of the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics continues to be a great destination for
visitors, both in person and on the web. The 90 and 120 meter jumps are used year
round for training as well as competition (a Continental Cup summer event was held
in July 2003, and a World Cup is scheduled for winter 2004). In addition, there are
10, 20, and 40 meter junior jumps, also used year-round. This website isn't specific
to jumping, but it's a terrific showcase for the whole Olympic complex!
Lake Placid NY
This comprehensive and visually exceptional website is run by the Olympic Regional
Development Authority, and contains some good information on ski jumping, but also
on other winter Olympic sports, and on the region in general.
Nordic Combined Websites
US Nordic Combined
This is the official site of the US Nordic Combined team. Well-maintained, informative,
have a look! We also have a link to this site on our homepage, below the US Ski Team logo.
Nordische Kombination
German site, good source of information about Nordic Combined competition at the World Cup Level.
For a tip on translating foreign sites, see the note under "International Websites" below.
Klingenthal Ski Club
Also in German, covers World Cup "B" Level Nordic Combined.
XC Skiing - Central Division
The Nordic disciplines include not only ski jumping, but cross - country (XC), Nordic combined
(jumping and XC), and biathlon (XC and marksmanship). This comprehensive site focuses on XC
skiing in the midwestern United States.
Just For FUN!
One of the most amazing animated presentations we've seen is this award-winning
student project from Japan. It's called
Ski Jumping Pairs. After you load the page there are buttons to
download two versions, one for dialup, the other for broadband. You'll need
Real Player to view it, but there's a download link if you want to get Real Player.
We'll keep adding more links as the site evolves. If you know of any good links that
would be of interest to ski jumpers or to others who follow the sport, please e-mail
webmaster@skijumpingusa.com.
We'll review it for inclusion. In general, we will give priority to sites which in turn
provide a link to us.
