Itasca Ski Club Winter Tournament Jan 12-13
Action on all four jumps, plus Nordic Combined races
It's time again for the annual Mt Itasca winter tournament, Jan 12-13. Mother Nature gave us a lot of early snow, and we've got all of our jumps and our Nordic trails ready for action.

Saturday's junior competition on the 10, 20, and 40 meter jumps begins at noon, and will be followed by a NC race. Then there will be a target jump event on the 70M hill at 5:00. On Sunday, there will be a 70M competition at 11:00, followed by a NC race. BOTH Sunday events will be Junior Olympics qualifiers for skiers in class J2, age 14-15.

Spectators are invited to watch ski jumping free of charge. Good viewing available along the lower portion of the hill, as well as from the inside of our comfy lodge.

Ski Jumping ... a Year-Round Sport
Ski jumping is a year round sport, and Coleraine is one of five midwestern venues currently equipped with the plastic surfaces required for summer jumping. Beginning with a training camp over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, there's a regular schedule of practice, training camps, and competitions at Mt. Itasca throughout the summer. We now have plastic surfaces on our 20 meter jump, which provides younger jumpers the opportunity to train in Coleraine, along with the more experienced skiers who use our 70 meter jump.

We have an attractive chalet, and visitors are welcome to come out and see our youngsters in action. You may wish to call in advance about hours; our kids travel quite a bit throughout the midwest during both the winter and summer seasons, and they also train and compete in Lake Placid NY and Park City UT. We'd like to have you come out and meet our skiers, and to see in person what this sport is all about. Kids start young on small jumps, and progress as ability, confidence, and coaches' judgment permits.

Ski jumping is not only a terrific spectator sport; it presents a wonderful opportunity for challenge and success for youngsters in a sport where "playing time" is not an issue, where competitors and families support each other, and where there are a lot of opportunities to travel to other communities and take part in a sport with a rich history in the U.S., dating back to the 1880s. There are volunteer opportunities available, too ... it's fun to be involved in any capacity.

Coleraine and Chicago have the largest year-round jumps in this region at 70 meters. There are four Olympic-sized jumps (90 to 120 meters) in the Midwest, at Iron Mountain and Ishpeming MI and at Eau Claire and Westby WI.

About Mt. Itasca and the Club
The Itasca Ski & Outing Club has a proud history dating back to 1906. The "Ole Mangseth" 70-meter ski jump is used year 'round for training and competition. The Itasca Ski Club's facilities include training jumps of smaller sizes as well: 40-meter, 20-meter, 10-meter and even a tiny 5-meter mini jump to train the very youngest of future Olympians.  We also have miles of trails for cross-country skiing, and for the sports of Biathlon (XC and marksmanship) and Nordic Combined (jumping and XC).

Our cozy chalet welcomes visitors and athletes to the facility, with a wide expanse of windows overlooking the downhill and jumping venues. We invite you to join us and learn more about the exciting sport of ski jumping!
