- Olympics Multimedia Gallery - The International Olympic Committee Website,
www.olympic.org
has a lot of photos and video clips available. The IOC would probably not
appreciate us "deep linking" to this page within their site, so here's how to
find it. Scroll to bottom of their homepage and click into "Multimedia
Gallery" (it's a very small text link). From there, you'll be able to
choose an athlete, a discipline, or a particular Olympics. We suggest you
select "Ski Jumping" as your discipline. Your ability to view videos will
be affected by your connection speed, your viewer (Windows Media, Real Player,
WinAmp, etc.), and by your security settings. We can't provide tech support;
you may have to fiddle with some of these programs and settings.
Click on the photos below to see a bigger image. Some of these photo files are quite
large and may take a while to load, especially with a dial-up connection. We suggest you
maximize the pop-up window; even then you may have to scroll to fully see some images.

Innsbruck, Austria
Bergisel 120 meter jump
This magnificent structure replaced the old Olympic jump, and is equipped with
plastic for summer jumping. It opened in the summer of 2002.
The glass-enclosed structure at the top is a restaurant.
The architect for this project was Zaha Hadid, an Iraqi-born woman whose firm,
based in London, has won many awards for contemporary architecture.

Utah Olympic Park ready for summer jumping
Both the 90 meter and 120 meter jumps in Park City have plastic surfaces for
summer jumping.
The National Sports Foundation runs a year-round training program that makes
use of these big hills, as well as several smaller jumps for younger jumpers
who are learning the skills that will enable them to fly from these big jumps
some day.
Clicking on this one will bring up a WINTER image of the same hills, taken
from a different angle.

temporary jump in the same stadium. You'll certainly
recognize the location in the larger picture!
We've got a picture of another stadium jump in an
even more unlikely location. See it on our History
page, along with some other old-time photos.
Among our contributors of historic photos are Don Dahl
and Tom Daggett.

Matthias Wallner, Austria
Iron Mountain MI, Continental Cup meet
120 meter hill (Carol Keck photo)
The record flight on this hill is 142 meters (466 feet), set at the 2004
Continental Cup meet by Olav Magne Doennem of Norway. It had previously
been set at 140 meters in a 1996 World Cup meet by Masahiko (Happy) Harada
of Japan, and tied by Finland's Kalle Keituri in 2002. Doennem set an
unoffical record of 144 meters in a "long standing" competition after the
2004 meet.
The record on the Park City 120 meter Olympic jump stands at 137 meters
as of summer 2004. There are also 120 meter hills in Lake Placid and Calgary.
Of these four large jumps, only Park City is equipped for summer use.

This picture was taken at Schoenwald, Germany on Feb 12, at the only team competition on the
Ladies' Continental Cup (LCOC) circuit during the 2006 season. The US won decisively, as they were
expected to do. Elisabeth was new to the team at this time, but the other five were all ranked
among the world's top fifteen, with Lindsey #2, Jessica #3, Abby #8, Alissa #11, and Brenna #15.
This event was held simultaneously with the Olympics ... ski jumping is the only sport in the
Winter Olympics that excludes women!

The US Women's Ski Jumping Team, 2000
(competed in Europe, no FIS-sanctioned women's series at that time)
Pictured L to R are Karla Keck,
Liz Szotyori, Lindsey Van, Veronica Myhra, and Nupie Schnitzler. Karla was the
unofficial female world champion in 1999. Lindsey is ranked #2 in the world as
of winter 2006, and flew 171 meters in March 2004 at Vikersund, Norway. Karla
competed with the women's team through 2005, and continues as a strong competitor
in US events.

The FIS finally sanctioned an international Ladies' Continental Cup series for
the 2005 season. The very first competitions were held in July 2004 on the 90
meter Olympic jump in Park City. Both Lindsey and Karla competed. Lindsey had
a fourth and a fifth, Karla a fourteenth and fifteenth. They have truly been
pioneers of women's participation in this great sport.
